11 Dec PowerLight Technologies, formerly known as LaserMotive, is First to Market with Commercialized High-Power, Long Distance Optical Power over Fiber
Proven to Transfer Hundreds of Watts over Hundreds of Meters. Aimed at industry sectors including Aerospace, UAVs, Telecom, Disaster Response, Border Safety and more. Also names three key advisors
SEATTLE, WA, December 11, 2017—PowerLight Technologies, formerly known as LaserMotive, today announces it is the first company to bring high-power, long distance optical power beaming over fiber to commercial markets. Proven to transfer hundreds of watts over hundreds of meters, the company’s patented Power Over Fiber solution delivers power over a beam of light in either free space, or through standard fiber optic cables. PowerLight is the first company to bring high-power optical power beaming technology to commercial markets at these power and distance levels, representing a 10X leap to anything previously available.
The new technology can be deployed for air, ground and undersea applications, and is aimed at industry sectors including Aerospace, UAVs, Telecom, Disaster Response, and Border Safety, and more.
PowerLight employs lasers to convert electricity to light then safely beams the light to a high efficiency receiver where the light is converted back into usable electricity. Through the beam, energy can travel over long distances, at high altitudes, and in the deep sea giving devices enduring uptime.
Innovations by the company in beam shaping, beam safety, photovoltaic optimization have led to groundbreaking projects and products. This technology has been validated during demonstration and field testing with the likes of the Department of Defense, NASA, FBI, Lockheed, Airbus, and others.
As part of its name change and transition to commercial markets, the company also announces three new advisors: Barrie Graham, a senior advisor at WR Hambrecht+Co; James Judson, the well known telecom industry executive and venture capitalist who co-founded Eagle River Investments; and Kent Williams, an investment advisor with Vista Asset Management LLC with strong expertise across automotive, battery, life science, intellectual property and alternative energy sectors.
Founded in 2007 as LaserMotive, PowerLight is the first and only company to demonstrate the transfer of 400 watts over 1 kilometer. PowerLight has set three world records for beaming power over light, has won two NASA government awards among others, and advanced five generations of technology systems. For the military, which plays an important role in product and use-case validation, PowerLight technology provides an alternative system for delivering power to unmanned assets in the air, on the ground and underwater
PowerLight Technologies is a pioneer in the development of patented optical power beaming technology that uses high-intensity light to transfer kilowatts of power wirelessly through free-space or via optical fiber for air, ground and undersea applications—making it ideal for industries including Aerospace UAVs, Telecom, Disaster Response, and Border Safety. The company’s patented Power Over Fiber solution delivers power over a beam of light in either free space air or through standard fiber optic cables, and is the first company to bring optical power beaming technology to commercial markets at these power and distance levels. PowerLight technology provides more flexibility of use and longer asset operation than generators, small engines and batteries, by eliminating service interruptions, battery charging and exhaustion, and copper wire limitations. Founded in 2007, PowerLight is the first and only company to demonstrate the transfer of 300 watts over 1 kilometer.
