August 1, 2023, Kent, WA – PowerLight Technologies, the leading developer of safe, long-distance wireless power beaming solutions for kilowatt class power levels over kilometers of distance, today announced it shipped the first-ever power over fiber (PoF) prototype for telecom applications to a major US telecom company. This prototype distributes power without any copper wires using clean safe high-intensity light sent over fiber optic cable. PowerLight is working with a select number of telecoms globally to commercialize this PoF to 5G solution.
PowerLight is the world leader in power beaming safety and has a number of patents on this front. PowerLight’s key safety IP now makes long distance power beaming operationally and commercially viable for large-scale commercialization of the technology.
Previously, PowerLight teamed with telecom giant Ericsson to demonstrate the world’s first wireless power beaming to a 5G base station to showcase the flexibility that power beaming can provide to the design and deployment of wireless telecommunications networks. The demonstration involved wirelessly distributing power to Ericsson’s Streetmacro 6701, a 5G millimeter wave (mmWave) radio base. PowerLight’s wireless power beaming technology transmitted hundreds of watts over hundreds of meters, to power the 5G radio.
“The idea of long distance power beaming delivering more flexible and cost-effective power transfer for the telecom industry is closer than you think. This prototype demonstration, conducted with a major US telecom, using a 5G node powered by power-over-fiber to make a digital phone call, is yet another significant milestone advancement for the industry by PowerLight,” said Richard Gustafson, President and CEO of PowerLight.
Long-distance Power Beaming is the process of converting electricity into laser light, sending it some distance, then converting it back into usable electricity at a source of need. The beam is optimized for power, distance and efficiency, and includes an advanced safety system that has been rigorously evaluated and approved by multiple governing agencies. The beam can be sent wirelessly or over fiber optic cable and is “caught” and converted to usable power using a compact receiving unit containing specialized photovoltaic cells.
Long-distance Power Beaming reliably distributes power to mobile networks, to broader digital infrastructure, and to the millions of IIoT, edge compute applications, and autonomous systems that will run on them. PowerLight is now productizing and commercializing solutions for the global mobile telecoms market and continues to support and expand its business innovating and delivering new long distance power beaming solutions for defense markets.
