Kent, WA – PowerLight Technologies, the leading developer of safe, long-distance wireless power beaming solutions for kilowatt class power levels over kilometers of distance, is pleased to announce the successful completion of its first test run for a groundbreaking new capability for power distribution to maritime sensing and remotely operated vehicles (ROV) assets. As the market for maritime sensing for both commercial and defense markets rapidly increases, the requirements for more flexible, resilient, and sustainable power distribution solutions are increasing too. The initiative, aimed at enabling new cutting-edge maritime sensing capabilities for the Department of Defense (DOD), has surpassed expectations in its first phase, marking a significant step forward in underwater power distribution technology.
The test, conducted in the waters of Puget Sound at a depth of more than 500 feet, showcased the efficacy of the innovative technology developed by PowerLight Technologies. The Distributed Energy Provided Throughout the Seas (DEPTHS) program, in collaboration with Zeno Power, seeks to revolutionize the field of undersea operations by enabling long-endurance seafloor power for critical capability such as sensitive sensing and communications systems.
“DEPTHS is a project to “develop decentralized nodes for energy generation and distribution on the seabed” (October 31, 2023 press release from Zeno Power). The DEPTHS project aims to pave the way for a new era of undersea exploration and operation, enabling distributed maritime assets to operate for extended periods without the need for recharging.
This breakthrough technology opens doors to a myriad of future applications, including enhanced maritime sensing, environmental monitoring, maritime monitoring and maintenance of key infrastructure, and extended operational durations for undersea missions.
“We are thrilled to witness this successful maritime demonstration of our power over fiber solutions,” said Richard Gustafson, CEO at PowerLight Technologies. “The completion of our first test run signifies a major milestone in our journey towards delivering advanced solutions for underwater power distribution. We are excited about the potential of this technology to transform undersea operations in both the commercial and defense markets and to enable new, more cost effective and sustainable solutions for maritime operations.”
Looking ahead, PowerLight Technologies remains committed to integrating this solution with advanced new power generation capabilities with Zeno Power by 2025. With ongoing developments progressing on schedule, the company is poised to revolutionize the way energy is harnessed and distributed beneath the waves.
