Over the last few years, PowerLight has undergone a rigorous technology demonstration and validation process involving a number of DoD and university-based science and technology labs. Some of the achievements during that time:
- Demonstrated the delivery of wireless laser power to a drone aloft for 48 continuous hours.
- Delivered laser power over fiber to a submersible ROV.
- Set a world’s-first in long-distance wireless laser power delivery by demonstrating 480W over 300M, without the need for laser safety eye protection.
- Demonstrated an 3X reduction in laser receiver size and 18x reduction in weight to support more advanced flight operations in the future.
- Developed and deployed the world’s first fully integrated, end to end safety system incorporating both passive and active safety features include active sensing, beam termination, and reflection control.
- Successfully conducted validation testing of our safety light curtain at 1km.
- Achieved safety system compliance with both IEC 60825-1 and ANSI Z136.1, requirements for safe permissible exposure to laser radiation; this was independently validated by the US Navy’s Laser Safety Review Board.
The company is now shifting to working with DoD stakeholders, as well as commercial industry partners, to operationalize wireless and fiber-optic laser power solutions in support of the demands of new technology deployment, particularly those driven by the expanding communication networks and autonomous assets. Recent engagement include:
- Awarded a Naval Research Lab contract to design first ever photo-voltaic receiver to “catch light” from DE Laser weapon providing radical new dual-use capabilities for existing DoD investments in DE Laser weapons to now deliver safe and reliable wireless laser power across the battlefield
- Awarded ONR contract to provide foundational data and algorithms to model wireless laser power solutions to support use case evaluations and prioritization as DoD seeks to operationalize wireless laser power
- Awarded NASA contract to support conceptualization and design development for wireless power lunar operations
- Collaborated with major global telecom to conduct proof-of-concept for wireless 5G base station
