June 9, 2023, Kent, WA – PowerLight Technologies, the leading developer of safe, long-distance wireless power beaming solutions for kilowatt class power levels over kilometers of distance, announced that CTO Tom Nugent presented on “Trends in Optical Power Beaming” at the 2023 IEEE Wireless Power Technologies Conference and Expo (WPTCE), taking place this past June in San Diego.
WPTCE is the largest event in the world for wireless power research and industry engagement. At the conference, Nugent detailed how recent innovations in delivering long distance wireless power beaming will lead to a sea change in the transmission of kilowatt-class power for both short and long distance, including both Power-over-Fiber and Wireless Power beaming solutions for myriad commercial applications.
Also, Dr. Paul Jaffe with DARPA delivered a Plenary session briefing on its newest Persistent Optical Wireless Energy Relay (POWER) Program. For POWER, PowerLight has been awarded two different roles, working with Raytheon and Draper Laboratories, respectively on separate approaches.
POWER seeks to build an airborne energy relay system for high-altitude, long-range transmission of energy for global military operations with contested logistics and/or multi-domain operations. The relay system will generate power where it is safe and efficient to do so and, using ground-sourced lasers, safely distribute power through multiple airborne nodes back down to support US Joint Forces and allies operating around the world. PowerLight’s long-distance wireless power beaming technology will be a key component.
Dr. Jaffe, within the context of notable advances in wireless power beaming power, distance, and efficiency, called out a number of PowerLight beaming proof-of-concept demonstrations. Dr. Jaffe also noted the critical need for fully integrated safety solutions for both military and commercial deployments, here again pointing to PowerLight’s innovative development and demonstration of these capabilities.
Wireless Power Beaming is the process of converting electricity into laser light, sending it some distance, then converting it back into usable electricity at a source of need. The beam is optimized for power, distance and efficiency, and includes an advanced safety system that has been rigorously evaluated and approved by multiple governing agencies. The beam can be sent in the air and is “caught” and converted to usable power using a compact receiving unit containing specialized photovoltaic cells.
Wireless power beaming reliably sends power over that critical or tactical “last mile” to equipment/vehicles that are autonomous, stationary, or moving on the ground, even if in the air. Wireless Power Beaming also supports flexible power delivery via fiber optic cables to equipment and vehicles, including those underwater, enabling cleaner and safer undersea operations and exploration in the future.
