June 8, 2023, Kent, WA – PowerLight Technologies was issued U.S. Patent No. 11,681,071 for a safety system for free space power beaming. PLT now holds 17 U.S. patents, in addition to a number of foreign patents and worldwide applications. Power beaming involves transmitting optical power from a laser to a receiver that can convert it back into electrical power at a point of need. Depending on the application, power can be transmitted either through air or through an optical fiber.
CTO Tom Nugent said, “Our new patent is for a method of making sure that any reflections from our receiver are safe for humans and animals. This technology is another example of PLT’s commitment to making high-power, long-distance power beaming as safe as any other means of delivering power.” Long-distance power beaming reliably distributes power to mobile networks, to broader digital infrastructure, and to the millions of IIoT, edge compute applications, and autonomous systems that will run on them. PowerLight is now productizing and commercializing solutions for the global mobile telecoms market and continues to support and expand its business innovating and delivering new long-distance power beaming solutions for defense and space markets.
